Information
I work in painting, sculpture, printmaking and photography, exploring feelings of loss and grief through the fragmentation and distortion of the human form, the face and the metaphor of the mask. I make objects and images and repeat and combine them to evoke the relic, the return of the past and haunting. Most recently, I am actively working with light and shadow, gaps and hollows as metaphors for grief and loss.
Although I start from my observational drawings, photographs, or my previous work, I often put away my source material, drawing heavily on my memory of what I have seen or made. In working from memory, my aim is to make work that has echoes of observation, but a strong dreamlike quality and emotional resonance. I like the idea that there is ambiguity in the context and meaning of the work as this is a form of disruption.
In sculptural work, I use different materials - metal, silicone, wax, plaster, clay, fabric, glass and paper - which hold the memory of an object but transform it, in order to record both what is lost and what remains in the process of transformation. I am particularly fascinated by the casting process which works through physical hollows, transforming positive impressions of objects to negative and back to positive and by the opportunity to intervene at different stages of the process to replicate, disrupt and alter forms. In analogue and darkroom work, I am exploring the potential of photography to act as what Roland Barthes called the expression and record of loss, the real and the unreal.
My process physicial, tactile and tends to be slow with many stages.
Currently I am completing an MAFA at City and Guilds of London Art School which will finish in September 2026.
