About the Interiors Series

These are a series of monotypes I made in 2023 and 2024 which are based on a combination on my observational drawings, photographs, and memories.  As such, these are not images of real people, but amalgamations of images and memories of people, which could be described as after-images. I made this work by painting alla-prima (in one sitting) on acetate sheets and running the sheets through a printing press. The image pulls onto etching paper and was not worked on after this.

I am interested in freshness of the mark making and the ambiguity and dreamlike quality which emerges in the work through this process. I was aiming to explore the way we transform what we recognise in others, as when we dream, into an into a version of others that we half recognise, but largely feel. There is a sense that what we see and understand of others is difficult to grasp, remember and understand. So, these works are also about forgetting and trying to remember.

As I worked on the series, I became increasingly interested in light as an expression of an inner emotional world and in this work light is explored in value, tonality and the use of the lightness of the paper. The fragmentation of the subject is expressed through mark making and I continue to explore light and fragmentation in my most recent series of work - Veils.
